Application of Magnesium Sulfate in Medicine

Magnesium sulfate is a magnesium-containing compound with the molecular formula MgSO4.It is a commonly used chemical reagent and drying reagent. It is colorless or white crystal or powder, odorless, bitter, and deliquescent. Now let's take a look at the applications of magnesium sulfate in medicine.
1.It can relax skeletal muscles, and has the effects of sedation, spasmolysis and reduction of intracranial pressure. It is often used in the treatment of convulsions, eclampsia, uremia, tetanus, and hypertensive encephalopathy.10%magnesium sulfate is injected into deep muscles or diluted with 5%glucose to 2%~2.5%solution.But it should be noted that direct intravenous injection or high-dose intramuscular injection is very dangerous.Generally,25%magnesium sulfate should not be used more than 15ml at a time.Attention should be paid to the patients'breathing and blood pressure.Knee reflex block is an important sign of sufficient magnesium ions.
2.Magnesium plays an important role in the metabolism of sugar and protein.Children in growth and development,if indigestion, take vitamin D,should be supplemented with magnesium salt.
3.Magnesium has many physiological functions similar to potassium.Because the clinical manifestations of magnesium deficiency are similar to potassium deficiency, magnesium deficiency is often overlooked. When symptoms do not improve after potassium supplementation, the possibility of magnesium deficiency should be considered first in order to correct hypomagnesemia in a timely manner. Therefore, patients receiving long-term infusion should pay attention to supplement magnesium as well as potassium.Hypomagnesemia can be prevented by daily infusion of 1g magnesium sulfate added.
4.When digitalis is used by patients with cardiac insufficiency, magnesium salt can be supplemented appropriately to prevent low magnesium from aggravating digitalis toxicity.Magnesium salt is often clinically effective in the treatment of tachycardia.
5.Oral absorption in the intestinal tract is less,so there is no such use.But it has a good laxative effect when taken orally,so it is also called a laxative salt. After oral magnesium sulfate solution reaches the intestinal cavity,it has a certain osmotic pressure,so that the water in the intestine is not absorbed by the intestinal wall. There is a large amount of water in the intestine, which can mechanically stimulate the peristalsis and defecation of the intestine. Therefore,it can also be used to treat constipation and abnormal intestinal fermentation;Combined with insect repellent,it can easily excrete intestinal worms.Dissolve 5-20g magnesium sulfate in 100-400ml warm boiled water each time, and take it orally once in the morning. The concentration should not be too high, but it needs to be 5%,otherwise the defecation will be delayed.
6.It can stimulate the duodenal mucosa, reflexively cause relaxation of the common bile duct sphincter and contraction of the gallbladder, thereby promoting the emptying of the gallbladder, which is beneficial to the gallbladder. It can be used to treat cholecystitis and gallstones,2-5g each time,3 times a day, orally before or between meals.Dilute 50%magnesium sulfate to 33%(high concentration),5mlTid.
7.It can also be used for gastroenterography.
8.Anti-inflammatory and detumescence:50%solution of this product is externally applied to the affected area, which has the effect of anti-inflammatory and detumescence.
That's all about the application of magnesium sulfate in medicine. It is mainly used for anti-convulsions in intravenous and intramuscular injections, which can cause vasodilation and lower blood pressure.Because of its skeletal muscle relaxation and hypotension effect,it is mainly used to relieve eclampsia, tetanus and other convulsions, and it is also used to treat hypertensive crisis. It is also used for barium salt detoxification.
